What a lovely moment for Oromians

Sifan Hassan (Siifan Hassan; born 1993 in Adama) is an Oromo-Dutch middle- and long-distance runner. She is the Dutch indoor record holder for the 1500 metres and 3000 metres and was the under-23 winner at the 2013 European Cross Country Championships. Hassan won the gold medal at 1500 m at the European Athletics Championships Zürich 2014 and won two bronze medal at the World Championships, in 2015 in the 1500 metres event and in 2017 in the 5000 metres event.

Sifan left Oromia as a refugee and arrived in the Netherlands in 2008 at age fifteen. She began running while undertaking studies to become a nurse.

Almaz Ayana Eba (born 21 November 1991 in Asosa) is an Oromo female long-distance runner who competes in the 3000 metres, 5000 metres, and 10,000 metres events. She set a new 10,000 metres world record, breaking the previous one set in 1993, when winning gold in the event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. At the 2017 World Championships in London Ayana won gold in the 10,000 metres, finishing 46 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Ayana lives in Finfinne.

Both runners met in London at 2017 World Championships.


On July 29, 2017, Sandscribe held its first film festival in the US to celebrate emerging filmmakers in Oromia/Ethiopia. The one-day festival took  place at the University of Maryland.

This event was open to the public and will feature afternoon workshops, followed by an evening of screenings, remarks, awards, and more. Sandscribe’s goal is to encourage aspiring filmmakers, foster a vibrant film industry in Ethiopia, and promote artistic collaboration that spans our continents.
